The top portion of this frame mimics what I see the most in the Inland Empire: sharp stakes used for fencing or windows. The bottom is what I see in other areas: ornate metal meant for aesthetic purposes. This frame is a combination of the two. It is both urban and classical. It frames life here in the IE. In the frame is a painting of yellow flowers I often see while walking. It is a simple aspect of the IE that I cherish, but we are losing as more warehouses are being built. To convey that sense of dissolution, I chose to paint on lace. Lace as a material is regarded as delicate and fragile. It can begin to fall apart if not properly cared for, just like our homes. Lace is also translucent, allowing you to see through to another space. People do the same thing with memories. For me, this piece is a memory and reflection of the beauty of living in the IE.
